First I think I need to start off this post with a disclaimer – you do not have to remove pubic hair if you don’t want to. It is all a matter of personal preference. Though for those of us who do choose to remove some level of pubic hair, I thought a post like this would be a great resource – because a razor is not your only option!
Scissors
Note: This is not an option if you want to remove all of your pubic hair. But scissors can be a great option if you just want to keep things neat and tidy down there. You will probably want a designated pair of scissors for your pubic hair (please don’t use the same pair of scissors as you do for cooking or cutting paper 😅 ) and I suggest grabbing this pair here. Be sure to be extra careful when tidying up with scissors. You’ll want to gently pull the hair so that you can see the skin underneath before making the trim. A mirror can also be helpful in seeing some of the more difficult places.
Razor
Probably the most well-known option, A razors may be the quickest and most cost effective way to go. Chances are you already own a razor for shaving other parts of your body and it doesn’t cost you anything extra when it comes to removing pubic hair. Be sure to shave in the direction of the hair growth to prevent ingrown hairs!
If you are in the market for a razor, I will never stop raving about Billie razors. The price is practically unbeatable and it leaves my skin silky smooth. I never cut myself and it rarely leaves ingrown hairs. Grab a Billie subscription here.
When using a razor, you’ll want to be sure to use shaving cream to lower your chances of cuts and irritation.
If you want to be a bit extra, exfoliating the area before shaving can help get rid of some of the dead skin cells to help you have a cleaner shave. Using a fragrance-free lotion afterwards can also be helpful in soothing the skin and preventing chafing.
Chemical Depilation
Chances are that you’ve heard of Veet or Nair. Both of these are chemical depilatories. With almost the consistency of lotion, you apply them to the area where you are trying to remove hair and wait a few minutes (check the package’s instructions). After that time has gone by, you scrape or rinse it off and you will find your hair will be easily removed along with it!
These products make hair removal simple and painless. The biggest complaint about these products is usually the smell. Chemical depilatories try their best to mask the scent with something pleasant, but at the end of the day it is still a chemical. You’ll need to decide if chemical depilation is for you!
Waxing
Waxing is a tried and true method. While it works, it can also be a bit painful. And costly. For your bikini line, you generally should schedule a session every two to three weeks. If you do decide to wax, I would encourage you to find a place that you like and look into their memberships. You can usually save a bit of money by buying a whole package rather than paying for each individual waxing session.
When it comes to pain, some individuals say that after the first couple of times it doesn’t phase you as much. Others encourage taking ibuprofen or tylenol beforehand to lessen the pain a bit.
Whatever you do, don’t knock waxing ’til you try it! It can be really convenient to know you have a scheduled time to always get it done, and to not have to do it yourself!
Sugaring
Sugaring is where all the hype is these days. It’s similar to waxing in many ways, but rather than using hot wax, the sugar mixture can be used at room temperature. Hairs also don’t need to be as long as they do when waxing. Many people also report a smoother feeling shave in comparison to waxing.
While there are recipes you can try to make your own sugar mixture, Sugar Doh Co is a popular brand that makes it easy! They sell kits that come with applicators, powders to prepare your skin for sugaring, and serums to calm your skin afterwards. Their website also is extremely informative and walks you through step by step. And no. This is not an ad (though I wish it was?). I just love the product! Grab your own Sugar Doh kit here.
