My Top Book Recommendations

This post is a compilation of some of my very favorite books that I love recommending to clients, friends, and family. I hope you take the time to read some of them and find as much insight in them as I have!

Start with Why – Simon Sinek

Simon Sinek is a master at getting to the heart of the matter. What is your intention in life? Who do you want to become? This book is one of my favorites for self-development and purpose.

The Happiness Advantage – Shawn Achor

This book inspires me to look at things from an angle of gratitude and happiness. Shawn Achor reads this book if you choose to listen on Audible. I enjoy listening to this book regularly.

Crucial Conversations – Patterson

In order for relationships to flourish we need to have hard conversations. This book is great for business and personal relationships.

Mating in Captivity – Ester Perel

Ester Perel, world renown sex therapist, helps us understand the need for both mystery and selfhood within committed monogamous relationships. Get it here.

Slow Sex – Diana Richardson

This book is my all-time favorite book on sexuality. Diana is a friend and colleague. Her approach to mindfulness in sexuality is both beautiful and sustainable over time.

Sexual Wholeness in Marriage – Dean Busby

My colleagues at BYU wrote this excellent book for couples who are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. A good book to understand sex as a whole relational package.

Intimacy & Desire – David Schnarch

David Schnarch has been one of my favorite authors since grad school. His approach to sexuality is totally based in selfhood, which is what I constantly preach. This book puts you (and your why) together in bed with your spouse (and his/her why). I honestly cannot say enough good about the power associated with practicing what is taught in this book. Beware, he occasionally uses the “F” word in his writing.

Knowing Her Intimately – Laura Brotherson

Laura Brotherson, whom I consider the pioneer in LDS Sexuality, gives excellent advice for both men and women to understand female sexual desire and orgasm. I use this book regularly in my teaching at BYU.

How to Avoid Falling in Love with a Jerk – Jon Van Epp

Love, love, love this book! Jon Van Epp is a master at telling it like it really is in dating relationships. His direct, humorous approach is informative and fun.

Love Sense – Sue Johnson

This is my personal favorite book on romance in relationships. Sue Johnson’s thoughts and observations in couples therapy, accompanied with her sound research, makes this book so practical.
